Who are you? It's a question for the ages, but in today's world, there is so much opportunity to craft your own unique identity. People are creating new terms to define themselves or discarding labels altogether. Some feel a need to find or invent a word that accurately describes who they are, while others wish not to be confined by a static label. All of these approaches to identity development are valid. But there's more to defining oneself than just finding the right label (or none at all) - many people struggle with accepting their own uniqueness. It can be hard to stand apart from the crowd, to feel like you don't fit in, to not be able to see a reflection of yourself among your peers or in popular media. And when you're walking outside the mainstream, you can often feel very alone and misunderstood.
That's where I come in. I am a sex and relationship therapist under the Supervision of Dr. Tom Query at Wellspring Counseling Center in Roswell, GA. I specialize in offering therapy & counseling services to polyamorous, kinky, queer and trans folk. I am passionate about offering non-judgmental, supportive, understanding therapy to those with alternative lifestyles, gender & sexual identities, and relationship choices.
I have a warm, non-judgmental, empathic approach and I enjoy working with people in the context of their intimate and familial relationships. I will help you to explore and understand your own inner reality and how to interact with each other in a healthier, more constructive and compassionate manner. I believe that we all possess an innate ability to heal ourselves, with the right guidance, support and tools. I want to serve relationships and families of all types since I believe that intimate and familial relationships are vitally important to an individual's mental and emotional health and development.
While I welcome all clients, I especially desire to support those in non-mainstream relationships - specifically lesbian and gay couples, bisexual people, transgender people, those living in polyamorous families, and those living in kinky households. I honor your gender identity, sexual orientation, and/or relationship style as valid. I also welcome teens and young adults who are exploring their identities and/or going through any coming-out process. Although these alternative relationship/family structures have some unique therapeutic needs and challenges, they also suffer from many of the same conventional issues that afflict traditional families. However, they often have difficulty finding therapy from professionals who understand them and can address their relationship issues without invalidating their unconventional relationship structures.
In the course of my studies, I have discovered that I am particularly drawn to Emotionally Focused Therapy (Sue Johnson) and Solutions Focused Therapy (de Shazer, Berg). Please look around to review my CV, certificates of additional training, and a sampling of the papers I've written on topics related to my preferred populations.
I recently celebrated the 11 year anniversary of my own polyamorous, D/s relationship and have been active in both lifestyles for approximately 15 years. I have presented on polyamory, kink, gender, and sexuality topics for the last six years, including a six part teleseminar on polyamory (available as MP3s).
